How to Keep Your Thoughts in Check

Every victory begins in the mind. In fact, the way you think is so powerful, it can control how you feel and what actions you take. Constantly thinking negatively about a situation will not only make you feel bad but decreases the likelihood that you will seek positive steps to resolve or work through it. Thankfully, there are ways to win this battle. Here are just a few:

Just breathe

Slowing your breathing relieves tension and will help to calm your body and heart rate. This will allow you to not act based on emotion and will give you some time to begin to analyze your issue rationally.

Stop doing whatever is causing you to be distracted

A lot of times we allow thoughts to enter our head based on the type of activities we engage in. If you are trying not to think about a person or situation, don’t partake in activities that bring up natural associations with that individual or circumstance.

Encourage yourself

When you begin to find yourself overanalyzing or dwelling on negative thoughts, say something like “thank you for sharing, but no thank you”, or “I will not allow myself to dwell on this”.

Fill your mind with positivity

Just like you are what you eat, you think what you know. The more you focus on empowering yourself intellectually, the less you will have time to think about things that do not add to your happiness or success. Read a book, listen to music, attend a webinar, whatever you need to do to increase your knowledge, go for it.

Know that it is natural

You are human, as such, you are going to have times when a negative thought pops into your head. The objective is to be able to reduce the frequency and duration of these occurrences so that more of your time can be spent being productive.

Hopefully these tips will come in handy. What are some ways that you keep your thoughts in check?
