When times get difficult it’s easy to begin pointing the finger at circumstances, other people, or even God. But sometimes the true enemy is in the mirror. Painful I know.
The good thing is, this is one problem that you do have the ability to correct. Here are a few tips to get you there.
Take Responsibility
The first thing you must do if change is ever to happen is to take responsibility for the part you play in your current situation. This very well may be the most difficult step for most of us, because let’s face it, we are all perfect 😉
Analyze What Went Wrong
Ok, now that you know your part, it’s time to reflect a bit. What exactly went wrong? Was it a bad decision? Failure to listen to sound advice? Intentionally turning a blind eye to the issue? Whatever it was, until you figure out where you made the mistake, you won’t be able to correct it.
Figure Out What You Can Do Differently
As life would have it, certain problems tend to present themselves more than once. Therefore, it’s important that you learn from the past so that you can make better decisions in the future. Having the knowledge of what went wrong will equip you to get it right next time around.
Put In the Work
Change doesn’t happen automatically. The more you practice a skill the better you get at it. So, if your weakness is people pleasing, take the time to work on setting boundaries for yourself. Learn how to say no to things that cause overwhelm or that you just don’t have the capacity to take on.
If your weakness is poor decision making, make an effort to surround yourself with wise secure people who can give you a little direction. If you have a temper or resentment issues, find ways to develop self control and confidence so that you don’t have to be preoccupied holding on to grudges.
Keep It Moving
When you get knocked down, you’ve got to get back up. It will take some time and practice, but once you get into the swing of things, you’ll be just fine. As a matter of fact, you will look back at what you have overcome and celebrate your progress. After all, that is the whole goal. Be a better person, each and every day!
