A Simple Solution
I am reminded of a little experience I had the other day. My son walks up to me and says, “Mom, I’m thirsty.” I told him OK, so how do you solve that problem? Right away he goes into the fridge and pours himself a drink. Simple solution, huh?
How many times do we go seeking help or sympathy for situations that we have the power to change? When you begin living life motivated internally, rather than dependent on external factors lining up, you realize that you possess more power than you think to alter your condition.
Self-Reliance
Self-reliance and resourcefulness are very important skills to develop. Children go through stages of growth and understanding, and as they learn and are given the opportunity to exercise independence, they become more confident and able to face conflict.
The same holds true for adults and our ability to withstand hardships. Without inner fortitude, many fall by the wayside or never fully develop or fulfill their potential. Instead, time is wasted focusing on the problem or perpetually seeking empathy. Once you realize that you cannot control what happens to you, but can exercise the ability to adjust, you gain control over your destiny to the extent of your humanity.
Reality Check
Do things happen in life that are unfair? Yes. Does doing good always lead to positive outcomes? Not necessarily. Does knowing who you are and what you are capable of put you in a better position to face the world? Absolutely.
Reflection
Today, take some time to think about those areas in your life that you are waiting on someone else to help you change or that you wish would get better. How much of the responsibility falls on you? What can you do to make the adjustment to shift your position? Because at the end of the day, you might find out that you do have the power to change the situation.
